One Church One School
A Community Partnership Program
Vision and Goals
The vision of One Church One School is that every school in our nation will be in partnership with one or more neighboring churches to improve the academic achievement, social behavior and personal development of our children and youth.
Needs Assessment
The free and reduced lunch data noted above indicates that approximately 50% of families in SWMS school qualify for economic assistance. Discussions with the principal and other knowledgeable individuals can provide insight on what services the church could provide to need families.
Additionally, while SWMS outperforms Arkansas in reading and math proficiency, there remains an opportunity to help the 36% who need help in these areas. Services such as tutoring in math and reading or providing them use of Internet access for homework activities can be desirable assets in the community.
When searching for tutoring services, we find few, if any, literary or tutoring services for children 3 4 and youth. While there are some for adult literacy , very few of them target middle schoolers.
Based on the data above, it appears that there is a need for tutoring in reading and math. While we have not discussed this matter with the school, it appears that an additional outlet for tutoring is needed. Additionally, given the number of students that qualify for free or reduced lunch, an after school job for families of such students could also be beneficial.
